NUGA Council Convenes at UNICAL to Review Key Priorities for University Sports Development
The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) held its Council Meeting at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) on 21 and 22 October 2026, bringing together Council members to review policies and discuss athlete welfare, competition planning and the development of university sports in Nigeria.
Key Areas of Discussion
The meeting addressed key aspects of university sports administration, including athlete welfare, membership and governance, accreditation, competition planning, institutional collaboration and measures to strengthen the organisation and delivery of NUGA Games. Discussions also considered the evolving needs of university sport, with attention to sustainable operations, improved event delivery and opportunities to strengthen the commercial value and visibility of competitions.
Athlete Verification and Administration
The Council considered measures to strengthen student-athlete verification and sports administration, including collaboration with relevant national institutions. Discussions also covered eligibility requirements, Council membership and communication, with the aim of supporting effective administration across member universities.
Enhancing Event Coverage
NUGA is exploring opportunities to strengthen the coverage and visibility of its Games and activities, with plans for enhanced event coverage and live streaming. The development is expected to create new opportunities to connect university sports with wider audiences and improve the visibility of student athletes and competitions.
Upcoming University Sports Competitions
Following the successful FASU AfroVarsity 3x3 Basketball Challenge, further developments are anticipated in African university basketball, with the African Basketball Federation planning upcoming championships. Updates on the championships and future Nigerian University Students Sports Association (NUSSA) competitions will be communicated in due course as further details become available.
Nigerian Universities at the FASU Games
The Council received the report of the 12th Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games in Cairo, Egypt, where four Nigerian universities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and the University of Jos (UNIJOS), collectively brought home nine medals across team and individual events.
Their achievements demonstrate the potential of Nigerian university athletes and the value of continued preparation and institutional support. With the 2027 FISU Summer World University Games scheduled for 1 to 12 August in South Korea, there is an opportunity to build on this performance and strengthen Nigeria's representation on the international university sports stage.
Advancing University Sports
As the final Council Meeting of 2026, the meeting provided an opportunity to review progress and consider priorities for the period ahead. Through continued collaboration, improved event delivery and stronger support for student athletes and volunteers, NUGA remains committed to building a more competitive, visible and sustainable university sports ecosystem across Nigeria.
