At the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), we remain committed to recognising and celebrating students whose passion, leadership, and dedication continue to strengthen university sports across Nigeria.

For this spotlight, Ikechukwu Stephen Ugonna of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) is recognised for his passion for chess, sports, and student leadership. Born on 7 November 2002, Stephen is a chess enthusiast who values the discipline, strategy, and patience the game teaches. Beyond the chessboard, he is actively involved in sports as a participant, supporter, and contributor to the university sporting community.

Stephen's commitment to university sports is reflected in his previous service as Director of Sports at both departmental and faculty levels. He currently serves as Director of Sports in the Student Union Government at the University of Calabar, where he contributes to student sports leadership and promotes participation within the university community.

A lover of football, athletics, basketball, volleyball, and chess, Stephen sees sports as more than competition. For him, sports provide opportunities for connection, inspiration, personal development, and continuous growth. His involvement across different sporting interests reflects his appreciation for the role sports can play in bringing people together and strengthening campus communities.

Guided by his motto, "Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well," Stephen embraces a philosophy of dedication, purpose, and commitment in his approach to sports and leadership. His journey reflects the values of discipline, service, and active participation that contribute to the growth of university sports.

At NUGA, we celebrate students like Ikechukwu Stephen Ugonna, whose enthusiasm for sports and commitment to student leadership continue to contribute to the university sports ecosystem.

As we continue to spotlight outstanding students across Nigerian universities, we encourage more students to engage in sports, take up leadership opportunities, and contribute to building a stronger and more connected university sports community.
