Nile University Abuja Hosts 2021 IDUS Celebration

The 2021 International Day of University Sports (IDUS) celebration for the Nigerian university games association was celebrated on the 29th of September 2021 at Nile University Abuja alongside the planned lecture on Olympic Value Education System which is partnered by the Nigerian Olympic Committee.

The Nile University basketball team, Nile Spartans made up both teams of a basketball playoff event that entertained the OVEP participants, their fellow students and members of the community.

The Nile Spartans who are reigning champions of the Abuja City Basketball League (ACBL) and the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) / Total National Division One league champions. This vastly experienced team was divided into two teams of Blue and green. The game ended with team Green winning by 16 points, Green 68 Blue 52.

This was followed by free throw competition for other students, which raised the excitement of the crowd.

NUGA President Professor Steven Hamafyelto in his remarks thanked the Nile University for hosting IDUS and putting on display its League champions for the crowd to enjoy. He emphasized on the need promote what he describes as “Town and Gown”, he said; “we are working in keeping with the FISU policies for universities to make use of sports for health and healthy living and also to interact and interface with their immediate communities, so in trying to see how we can promote town and gown when it comes to the issue of health and sports. We are trying to create a colliding environment between the students and communities in order to tap from the resources available which includes the use of public sports facilities and equipment which might not be found in schools, which in turn encourages the ‘town’ to take part in sports which promotes healthy living”

 

Students from 4 other universities were involved in the celebration, Kanu State University of Science and Technology, Ibrahim Badamosi Babagida University, Lapai, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and the Federal University of Lafia.
