One Month to Go: IDUS Marks 10 Years of University Sport Worldwide
On 20 September 2026, the global university sports community will mark an important milestone as the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Since 2016, 20 September has been recognised as the International Day of University Sport following its proclamation by UNESCO. The annual celebration brings universities and their local communities together through sport, physical activity and healthy living while highlighting the role of university sport in education and society.
Over the past 10 years, FISU members and university sports organisations across Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas have celebrated IDUS in different ways. Activities have included races, sporting events, gatherings, lectures, conferences and cultural displays.
Throughout September, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) works with its members and university sports stakeholders to promote IDUS activities and encourage discussion around university sport. The celebration also provides an opportunity to exchange ideas, best practices, challenges and opportunities within the global university sports movement.
10 Years - 10 Kilometres
To mark the 10th anniversary of IDUS, FISU is inviting the global university sports community to take part in one collective activity:
10 Years - 10 Kilometres
On 20 September, universities and university sports communities around the world are encouraged to organise a 10-kilometre activity and bring as many people as possible together to move.
The 10-kilometre course can be organised within a city, around a university campus or in another suitable location. Participating communities are free to determine how they organise their activity.
The aim is to connect university sports communities across the world through one shared movement. From Oceania, Asia, Africa and Europe to the Americas, participating communities will organise their local activities and contribute their kilometres to the wider global celebration.
How It Works
Participating universities and organisations are encouraged to:
Set up a 10-kilometre course or activity. Gather as many people as possible to move together over 10 kilometres. Document the activity through photographs, videos and articles. At 4:00 PM local time on 20 September, share content from the activity on Instagram using #IDUS2026 and tag @FISU. Add up the total kilometres completed during the event and share the figure with FISU. Submit photographs, videos, reports, articles, reels and participant testimonies following the event.
FISU has also made official IDUS graphics and branding materials available to support participating organisations and institutions. As IDUS approaches its 10th anniversary, universities and university sports organisations across the world are being encouraged to begin planning their own activities and contribute to the shared global movement.
10 Years. 10 Kilometres.
Join the movement. Together, we move around the globe.
