NUGA Council Concludes Exit Meeting in Jos, Sets Focus on Calabar 2026
The Nigerian University Games Association NUGA concluded its Council Exit Meeting on June 11, 2026, at the Management Sciences Auditorium, University of Jos, bringing together sports administrators, council members, institutional representatives, and stakeholders from across the university sports community.
The two day meeting served as an opportunity to review activities undertaken since the last Council and Emergency Meetings, assess progress across key areas of university sports administration, and formally conclude the hosting cycle of the 27th NUGA Games before the transition to the University of Calabar as host of the 28th NUGA Games.
The meeting was attended by members of the NUGA Council, Directors of Sports, Chairmen of Sports Committees, delegates from member institutions, representatives of newly admitted universities, and other stakeholders within the university sports ecosystem.
Among those in attendance were the Acting Secretary General of NUGA, Mr. Yunusa Madi Bazza; the Vice President of NUGA, Dr. Ajibua Alayode; Ex Officio members, Professor Stephen Hamafyelto and Professor Rasheed Ojutiku; and the Technical Chairman, Professor Yakasai, alongside other council members and institutional representatives.
Discussions over the two days covered a wide range of issues relating to governance, competitions, participation, athlete development, and preparations for future activities within NUGA.
Council reviewed developments arising from previous meetings and received updates on recent national and international engagements, including the NUSSA Games and Nigerias participation at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Rhine Ruhr, Germany.
A major focus of the meeting was the 28th NUGA Games. Representatives of the University of Calabar provided updates on ongoing preparations, giving Council an opportunity to assess progress and discuss expectations ahead of the Games. The discussions reflected the growing momentum towards Calabar 2026 and reinforced the commitment of both NUGA and the host institution to delivering a successful event.
Council also considered matters relating to institutional participation and membership, reviewed academic and research initiatives within NUGA through the Scientific Conference Committee, and received updates on preparations for upcoming continental university sports activities, including the 12th FASU Games.
In line with efforts to strengthen governance structures, Council deliberated on the reviewed NUGA Constitution and adopted the revised document, marking an important step in the continued development of the Association.
The meeting also provided a platform for engagement with partners and innovators. Presentations explored opportunities for collaboration in sports development, while discussions on emerging technology highlighted the potential role of digital solutions in supporting university sports administration and operations.
As deliberations concluded, Council reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening university sports administration, expanding opportunities for student-athletes, and ensuring adequate preparations for future national and continental competitions.
With attention now shifting towards Calabar 2026, the meeting served as both a close to the University of Jos hosting cycle and a strategic step towards the next chapter of university sports in Nigeria.
