Adebayo Olatunde Takes Part in the FISU Volunteer Leadership Academy

University of Lagos’ student Adebayo Olatunde was part of this year’s first session of the FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy (FVLA) which was held online on the 26th of June 2021, the program gathered students and speakers from all over the world to discuss leadership and volunteers management within the framework of international sports.

The FISU Ambassador describes his experience as a huge privilege one he is grateful to have been given “Attending the FVLA for the second time is a huge privilege, before the commencement of the June session this year, I felt it was going to be a repeat of last year’s sessions. I was wrong, the guest speakers spoke on new themes. Dr Minh Tran spoke on “leading in the age of uncertainty” which is a very important lecture in today’s world. I had a great time, saw new candidates and also interacted with my returning colleagues”

The FVLA was initially planned to take place in Kazan, the capital of youth and the volunteers movement of Russia. Considering the current situation worldwide related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulty surrounding international travel, it was decided to maintain an online format for the event, similar to the previous year, a development that frustrated the Adebayo who anticipated meeting other ambassadors during this event. “I really wanted to meet my colleagues this year in Kazan and because I might not be able to see them another time. And no because, the online process helps to bring everyone together even though there is a pandemic situation in the globe.

Despite the non-presential format, this year’s educational program is expected to be as eventful and enriching as the previous Academies’ sessions. “I learnt about the execution of the Action plans of other ambassador across the world, how they were able to overcome challenges and how they have been able to ameliorate the values of university sport in their respective countries”.

The first session included an introduction to FISU and its activities, lectures on leadership as well as presentations of best practices of the Student Ambassadors programme. The positive dynamic made the session unforgettable for all the participants, which will be reunited again for the second session that will take place online on 8-10 September 2021
